Line-art lighthouse cross-section showing deep foundations below the waterline - ontological and somatic coaching for ADHD

What Is Somatic Coaching? (And the Ontological Work Underneath)

Of all the terms on my website, somatic coaching is the one that gets the most polite nodding followed by a quiet what is that actually. Fair enough. The word somatic just means of the body, and somatic coaching means working with your nervous system and physical state directly, rather than only working with your thoughts about them. It travels together with a second term on my site, ontological coaching, which is the deeper of the two and the one I am most extensively trained in. This post explains both, and why the pairing matters for ADHD brains in particular.

Why talking is not enough for ADHD

Most self-improvement runs on insight. Understand the pattern, choose differently. But ADHD challenges like emotional dysregulation, rejection sensitivity and shutdown do not start in the thinking brain. They start lower and faster, in circuitry that acts before your reasoning gets a vote. This is why the most self-aware people I know still blow up in the same meetings. Insight lives upstairs. The trouble starts in the basement, and somatic work is how you get basement access.

The ontological layer: who you are being

Ontology is the study of being, and ontological coaching works at exactly that level. Not what you are doing, but who you are being while you do it. The premise is simple to state and profound to work with: you do not act according to your plans, you act according to who you are being in the moment, and that way of being is built from three interwoven strands. The language you live in, especially the assessments you hold as facts. The moods you marinate in, which colour what looks possible before you have consciously thought anything. And the body you carry it all in, which is where the somatic work plugs in.

Here is why this matters so much for ADHD. Decades of missed deadlines, lost keys and disappointed faces do not just leave memories. They install a way of being. Someone braced for the next failure. Someone who reads every pause as incoming criticism. You can bolt the world’s best productivity system onto that way of being and it will produce the same life with better stationery. Ontological coaching goes after the observer you have become, the standing assessments like I always ruin things eventually, the resignation that arrives before the attempt. When that shifts, behaviour changes without being forced, which is the only kind of change I have seen hold.

What somatic coaching actually involves

  • Interoception training, which is the unglamorous skill of noticing what your body is doing while it is still whispering. Tight chest, set jaw, shallow breath, the specific tired that precedes a shutdown. Most ADHD adults have spent decades overriding these signals, and the override is expensive.
  • State-shifting tools that work in real time: breath patterns you can run in a boardroom, movement you can do between calls, nervous system regulation that fits inside an actual workday rather than requiring a retreat in Bali.
  • Pattern mapping, where we connect specific body states to specific behaviours. The 3pm snappiness is not a character flaw, it is a state, and states have levers.
  • Capacity building, which is slow-cooked. A nervous system that has run hot for decades learns safety gradually, through repetition, not through one big insight.

The two disciplines are not rivals, they are the same work approached from different ends. Ontological coaching names the way of being; somatic coaching gives you the physical handles to shift it. A new stance you can only think about is a nice idea. A new stance your body knows how to take is a new life.

The engineering view

I came to this work sceptical, because I spent thirteen years in an industry where feelings were not exactly a KPI. What converted me was realising that somatic work is instrumentation. You cannot control a process you cannot measure, and most of us are running complex lives with zero sensors on the equipment. The ontological side, in the same language, is the control philosophy: the assumptions the whole plant was designed around. You can tune instruments forever, but if the design philosophy is wrong, the plant fights you. Learning to read your own gauges and question your own design assumptions is not soft. It is the most practical upgrade available, and the research on body-based approaches to emotional regulation keeps stacking up behind it.

Is this therapy?

No, and the line matters. Somatic therapy processes trauma with a trained clinician, and if that is what you need, I will say so and help you find one. Ontological and somatic coaching build present-tense skills for present-tense life: regulation, awareness, a way of being that fits the life you are actually trying to lead. The two can coexist happily with therapy. If you have done years of talk-based work and still cannot feel a meltdown coming until it has arrived, the body piece is probably what has been missing. Both threads are woven through all my coaching, described on the professional coaching page, and a discovery call is the easiest way to find out if it fits.
