School, whatever else it was, came with rails. Bells, teachers who noticed, a timetable someone else built, parents running logistics in the background. Then you finish Year 12, arrive at university, and every rail is gone in a single summer. Nobody takes the roll. Nobody chases the essay. Lectures are recorded, which means skippable, which means skipped.
For students, transitioning to university with ADHD is the biggest support cliff they will ever walk off, and it explains a pattern I see constantly in Perth: capable kids with strong ATARs who spend first year drowning and conclude they are not university material. They are. They just lost their external executive function all at once and nobody warned them it was load-bearing.
Transitioning to university with ADHD: the danger zone
University assessment is long-range: twelve week semesters, assignments issued in week two and due in week ten. An ADHD brain with no urgency signal until the deadline is close will genuinely not feel the assignment exists until three days out. Add unstructured days, new city, new social world, late nights, and for many students the first time managing ADHD medication refills and appointments alone. It is a lot of systems to build simultaneously, in the semester you are least equipped to build them.
The systems that keep ADHD students afloat
- Build a fake timetable. Fill the empty week with fixed study blocks in fixed places, and treat them like lectures. Structure you build is the replacement for the structure you lost.
- Weaponise week one. Put every due date from every unit outline into one wall calendar on day one. The single biggest ADHD study strategy at university is making the future visible in February.
- Register with equity and access services immediately, not after the first disaster. Australian universities offer real ADHD accommodations: extensions, exam adjustments, alternative formats. Registering early is insurance you may never need. Registering late is paperwork in a crisis.
- Find your body doubles. Library groups, study rooms, even a quiet discord call with a friend. Working alone in your room is the highest-risk study environment an ADHD student can choose.
- Guard the basics. Sleep, food, movement, sunlight. Every one of these is medication for an ADHD brain, and every one collapses in first year unless someone decides on purpose that it will not.
For the parents reading this
Your job changes from project manager to consultant. You cannot run their calendar anymore, and trying will damage things. What you can do is help them build the systems before semester starts, fund the wall planner and the noise-cancelling headphones without commentary, and keep being the safe call when a bad week happens. A bad week is not the cliff. Hiding the bad week is the cliff, so make honesty cheap.
I coach university and TAFE students with ADHD across Perth and online, usually starting in that first-year window where the right systems change the whole degree. If that is your kid, or you, the details are on the ADHD coaching page, or get in touch for a free chat.
